This is indeed the old Secondary School in the background in Nelson Terrace. The bottom right of the picture shows the corner of Dovecot Street with the High Street. The person taking the photo is obviously standing on the top of the Town Hall facing towards Maxwells corner.
I believe this building was the Stockton Secondary School (a grammar school)which my mother, cousin and I all attended. It was two schools, one for boys and one for girls. I think that it was founded in the early 1920s and my mother would have gone there about 1923/4. In 1951, the year after I started, we all moved to the new buildings and became known as Grangefield Grammar School. The basement of the school was the shared gym. I think the other shared room was the Hall. The top rooms were the science laboratories and there were various outbuildings which housed different classes.
