Wooden fencing on extreme left was erected no earlier than 1965. It was put up by my uncle to keep us off the hospital land. Prior to this cattle grazed there and could often be seen wearing old bike tyres as necklaces.

I moved to Hardwick in 1962 into the house, which is visible between the The English Martyrs and St James churches, and lived there until I got married in 1968. My wife Jean nee Laverick moved with her family from Lawson St to Hardwick in 1958 and were one of the first families on the new estate I have previously mentioned both our family’s connection with St James on other parts of this site so it was with great sadness that on a trip back home in Jan 07 we saw the disgraceful run down condition the Church is now in. Words can’t really describe the way we felt. The grounds are overgrown, the doors boarded up and vandals are in the process of smashing all the windows. The Sculpture is no longer on the wall, I hope this has been removed for safekeeping and not because it has been vandalised.
This picture shows the Health Centre and english Martyers church on the right with St James church at the back. on the left is where the hospital stands now, so this photo was taken before the hospital was built. I moved to Hardwick in 1958 and still live there today.
