Born in Stockton, William Thomas Hay (1888 – 1949), he became one of Britains most popular comedians. At the age of forty-six, and after 25 years in music hall and radio, he made his first film debut in 1934 with Those Were The Days. He went on to make 19 films in total including Oh, Mr Porter!
Somewhere in my memory bank, as a child, I’m sure someone told me he lived in Stamp Street?. Anyone out there confirm this.
Dave.

I believe he was born at 23 Durham Street, around the corner from Stamp Street.
