Stockton in Steam

LNERs motto was forward, adopted from the Great Central Railway.  Beneath the figure of Mercury emerging from a cloud of steam, the shield included the St George Cross and two London griffins, a representation of Edinburgh Castle, and four of the York Lions, all signifying the route of the LNERs main line linking the English and Scottish capitals and passing through the ancient capital of Northumbria.
