I lived in St Cuthberts Road from 1945 to 1970, I remember Miss Leonard’s who were sisters Nicholson’s the bakery Coop and London the butchers. What was the builder called who had his premises there in Northcote Street?.
H Linda, the builders were Stonehouses. It later became a glass factory. Miss Leonard’s became Fat Kee Chinese take away, very popular for many years. I believe that it only recently closed due to ill health. I know that the billboarded area over the road from you became garages, they in turn were demolished and a few flats/maisonettes have recently been built in place of them. I know a few people that still live in the area, so get to know snippets of info.
Hi. I was wondering if anyone has photos of the Parkfield area re Arlington st through to Northcote st, and of their demise with the bulldozer, I used to live there many moons ago and would be very interested in seeing photos, Regards Marie
All four photographs of the various businesses were based between what we called The Raggy Back in the middle of Northcoote Street down towards Boweafield Lane. By now I would think they have all changed hands if still open sell other things than whats shown. The corner shop next door but one to big garage door finally ended up as a barbers shop but is now closed because my barber moved across Bowesfield Lane to a corner shop which a lot of years ago was the old Post Office. Sue I”m afraid I dont have any infomation about your family other than the last owners Mr and Mrs Bruce and family came to live in our road in Hartburn many years ago and my son Derek went to school with the son who was called Paul. He was a regular visitor to our home but lost touched with the family when they had some problems and moved from the area. Is the Paul M Bruce at Hotmail our Pauls son? If so if he contacts the Picture Stockton team they will give him my e-mail address and I will put him in touch with somebody who knew his dad. Good luck with the search.
I too am looking for info on Pinkneys sweet shop(he was my great grandfather)and as yet we havent been able to sight any photos of it, can anyone help? If so it would be much appreciated.

Hi Alison. I sent a comment about Mr Pinkneys sweet stall outside the Cinema in the High street but forgot to say that the sweets were made by Mr Pinkney in the old baptist church hall in Northcoat street. The Hall at one time belonged to lightfoot grove baptist church untill the new hall was built next to the church in Bowesfeild lane there was a good variety of boiled sweets very popular with the Cinema goers in the 1920s and 1930s. Sorry I dont have any photoes just the memory, I am surprised that the building is still there
Hi, does anyone remember anything about John Pinkney”s sweet shop? I have a copy of it listed in the 1912 ward”s directory as at 12 and 14 Northcote Street, I have been down there today and saw what looked like an old church is now a Mosque and a shop which is all boarded up with metal shutters. I believe he had a market stall too. I would love a picture of how it used to look or anyone”s memories. Thanks.
My dads aunt Violet Groskop married George Pinkney, they had one daughter Cath. His father John George owned most of the homes in Eleanor Place, I have a photo of John George, and his last will and testament.
Sue Bruce. Sue, although I don”t have any info about Bruce”s Pickles, I certainly do remember them with affection. There was nothing better than their pickled onions. I now live in the south but am from Stockton myself and whether our tastes buds have changed the current pickled onions are not a patch on those produced by Bruce”s
Does anyone remember; C BRUCE & SON MINERAL WATER & PICKLES ? They were at 6 northcote street if anyone has information or photo”s i would be grateful if they would post as im researching my family tree .It was there in the 1960″s .
My mam Mrs Surtees was a cleaner for Mr and Mrs Bruce and my sister worked in the factory Mrs Bruce was very kind I remember their son Jack and I have a photograph of his daughter aged about 9 .
Ah yes the old fruit shop ! That was owned in my childhood days by old Laurie .Mam often used to send me there for a few spuds ! …then off round the corner to Maurices the butchers for half an ounce of live yeast .
