Anyone have anyone who would remember my mum Violet Gibbons. She would have started Bowesfield Lane school approximately 1927. She then moved to Richard Hind Central School and latterly the Open Air School. She had a cousin called Doreen Street.

Hi folks, I’ve just landed on this site. My late husband Mick Cowell grew up in Ellicott Street. I’m sure Jimmy Mcurly will remember.

Hi Sue. Of course I remember Mick! We were kids together in Ellicott Street, and very god friends. I was very sad to hear of his passing. How are you doing? I’m still in touch with Norman Beall, who lived in the house directly opposite the Cowells. I also remember Mick’s brothers Jeff and Colin.

Hi to Jim and Norman. Mick talked about his childhood and both of you got a mention. I seem to remember that Norman had a flat in Thornaby, where I lived on Acklam Road, all that part gone now. Such a long time ago but not.. I’m sure you both understand the logic. Keep well.

Sue, you won’t remember this, but I met you once, sometime in the late sixties/early seventies. I was home for a few weeks from Canada, and I bumped into Mick and you in the High Street one Saturday afternoon. I subsequently met Mick for a pint a couple of times over the years during my many visits back to Stockton, including at the Ellicott Street reunion that Norman refers to. I remember Mick saying that your son Daniel played rugby for Stockton.

Sue, you are correct I did live in 38 Acklam Road when I first got married. It was a company flat which we rented from my employer Power Gas where I was a draughtsman. We then moved to Norton and finally to Eaglescliffe when we still live!
Great childhood where we seemed to play games all the time in the back streets. Foundry gate was our football goal and the adjacent gas light our floodlights. No problem playing in the dark in those days. How things have changed!

I knew Micky as we called him really well as we were the same age and grew up together in Elliott Street. I lived in no 9 and he lived in no 10 with his dad Chick and mam Betty! Hi Norman, Peter Salmon lived “over the back fence” from Mick and I for 40years although we very rarely saw him except when our youngest was lobbing balls over the fence.🙄

My mum went to Bowesfield Lane School. Her name was Violet Gibbons. Her family lived on Parliament Street where her father who was a master draper had his business. Mum reached the great age of 100 years on 2nd June this year

Linda, My mother would have been 100 this year gone 29th January. She lived in Hartington Road then and I never knew if she went to Bowesfield school or Mill Lane?. Her name then was Doris Arthur, could you please ask your mother if she knew of her?. Thank you. Dave Murray.

My name is Stephen Ward, eldest son of Lol and Sheila and I went to Bowsie Lane approx. 1960-1965. We lived at the bottom of Selwyn Street next to the foundary. Names I remember are the Jacksons and Maddisons.

Stephen, My name is Dave Jordison, I lived in 14 Selwyn Street in the early sixties, and went to Bowesfield Lane school too. My parents were Herbert & Brenda. My family emigrated to New Zealand in 1966, and from memory you have a sister named Janice.

Hi Sheila, I am sure my best mate Keith Spence lived with his gran, Mrs Drummond in Ellicott Street and he had an aunt Lily who lived in Arlington Street. We must have met at some polnt back then but memories fade with time.

Hi Dave yes you are right Keith is my cousin and did live with my nana Drummond as did his sister Barbara. Keith is older than me, I am 61 and now live in the West Midlands but will be retiring back up north, can’t wait. Do you still see Keith if so give him my love. I last saw him Sept last year at my mothers funeral, we took her back home to be buried, Keith looked really well. I remember as a kid going to Waltons shop on the corner to get his razor blades he always said keep the change,the change was always more money than I was used to and straight back to the shop I went. Ah fantastic memories, the years have flew by and it just seems like yesterday.

Hi Sheila just picked up this message as the website moves on much quicker than the original, glad to hear that Keith is OK as I lost touch when I remarried and now live down near London. Still remember great teenage years with Keith and other friends in many pubs and the Maison, Jubilee and Astoria good memories of Stockton but the years do fly away.

I lived in Ellicott Street throughout the fifties and into the mid sixties. I went to St. Cuthbert’s school and then St. Mary’s College in Middlesbrough. All the other kids of various ages in the street went to Bowesfield Lane, though some of them moved to other schools following the 11+. Some names: Malcolm Taylor, Brian Evis, Norman Beall, Michael Cowell, Peter Salmon, Keith Brocklesby,Barbara Stevenson, Brenda Bell, Carol Burlison I remember Mrs Drummond. Ashmore’s gate was at the end of the street and at five o’clock the buzzer would go, the gate would open and the workmen would run up the street in their hurry to get home (or maybe to the Bowesfield pub)!

I do remember you James I used to play with your sister Catherine when I was little, how is Catherine please ask her if she remembers me. I have lived in the west Midlands for eleven years now and I am a custody officer in a prison. I think you are a little older than me I am sixty one so can retire next year, I am looking forward to moving back up north probably to York.

My name is Victor Warwick, I lived in Mitre Street between 1952 and 1957. I went to Bowsfield Lane School and remember Mr Mathias, H. Maddison and C.M.Hill.
I remember the weeks leading up to Bonfire Night each street would gather up anything that would burn to light a bonfire. Each street would guard their bonfires in cace neighbouring streets like Cecil Street would nick it. One year we built our bonfire next to a little petrol station at the end of Mitre Street. Needless to say the fire brigade came round and removed it.
My mothers family name was Noad and her mothers name was Drummond.

Hi everyone, my name was Gibson and I lived at 8 Lindsay Street. I remember some of your names, and share some of the memories . Oggie raiding, Bondi night , and the election going around the streets singing. ‘Vote, vote, vote for Mr Rogers’. I went to St Cuthberts school, and then St Marys. My nana lived in Ellicot Street, her name was Katie Drummond. My dad was John Gibson and my mam was Margaret. My aunty Lily and uncle Lol Scott lived in Arlington Street, as did my aunty Jennie and uncle Gordon surname Mannion. Does anyone remember me? If so please get inn touch.

Hi, my name is Dave Walker. I lived in Mitre Street in the 1960’s and went to bowsie lane, fantastic school. I remember most of the teachers, Mrs Powell to Mrs Robinson and her m.g.b green sports car. Lads from the area; Stephen Dunn and Barry Blythe. My class Ian Bolam and Derek Ianson. I still support Sunderland thanks to Stephen Dunn. Man, where does the time go?

Hi Dave I don’t recall the name Walker but my family & I [the Harkers’] lived at No. 3 Mitre Street till we moved to Ragworth, December ’64. Due to the council’s idea of having all the street houses demolished & to build new properties over the next couple of years.

Karen Darby, your Mum must be Olive, as Mary Goldsbrough only had one sister, and two brothers, Alf and James. My Mum, Edna Beard (nee Storr) and Mary and Olive were first cousins, which makes us second cousins, the same as my relationship with Beryl. As I mentioned before the Storrs were a prolific family, must be hundreds of us about! Don’t know if you are still in touch with Beryl, but we still meet up for coffee occasionally, as we both live in Stockton. Pat Pattison… If you are Beryl’s relative then you are also mine, as Beryl’s Mum was my Mum’s Sister so she is my full cousin. I remember going to visit Nana (Mary Elizabeth Storr nee Galloway) at her house in Tilery back in the 1960s. Dave Shearer – I knew Denis Tatterton, although older than me, so did not mix with his age group but it was a nice street to live in except for the damp, it was hard to keep warm in those days – your wife may have known my sister Olwyn went to Bowesfield Lane school 13/02/2012 19:47:21
