  1. I have fond memories of the building in the upper picture in Prince Regent Street, which was situated opposite “George”s”. During the late 1960s and early 1970s the upper floor was used as the Youth Employment Office, and many school leavers of that era now in their 50s and 60s may recall going to see Mr Trenholm & Mrs Timm for help in finding jobs, collecting their National Insurance cards prior to starting work or if not so lucky, to “sign on”.The lower floor was used an adult education centre – for car maintenance and painting classes. It was adjacent to Maddox”s grain store and had a well fed colony of rodents living in the ceiling. The large entrance with the Fire Brigade sign above it led into a courtyard ,at the rear of which was a dancing school run by Connie Hall (I think)and attended by several budding Shirley Temples. The site of the building is now a car park.

  2. The building in question is the old fire station – now demolished. The upper picture was photographed from Prince Regent Street but the lower one is from West Row.
