Norton Board School opened in 1872, the school was demolished in the late 1970s. The Arch now leads to a supermarket, the path named Maybray King Walk after the ex Speaker of the House of Commons, a pupil at this school.

I was a pupil at the school from 1946 to 1951 then to Richard Hind A lot of my shool pals went to Richard Hind as not many of us passed both parts of the 11plus .Very happy memories of Norton Board and Norton itself Now live in Whitby after a career in Merchant Navy and HMCoastguard.

Your description of Mr Corner would also match the formidable Pom Roberts himself who terrified me in his weekly visits to our class until I left for Stockton Grammar in 1951 where there was an equally formidable headmaster, Thos (Boss) Ridley. Giants in those days?

I cannot remember the teachers name at the time circa 1960/61 ish but an agressive teacher was the reason my mum took me out of Norton Board and sent me to Fredick Nattrass school ( and straight into the hands of Charley Buckle 🙂 ) I only fell foul of Mr Buckle the once, lesson painfully learned.

Yes I remember Mr Corner. I was initially scared of him but he was just strict. I remember him in the dining hall teaching how to use knives, forks and spoons. He would say to put the base of the fork/knife into your palm and them wrap your fingers round to hold it. I also recollect him as bald??? He was followed by Mr Brown. I was born 6/10/57. I left Norton Board School in 1951 and went on to Richard Hind School. I well remember Mr Corner he put the fear of death into us all. Sorry my memories of him were not good. Everyone was scared stiff of him. Just so unnecessary. He would come into our class room to physically punish a pupil and then walk out. I was very pleased to leave in the third year.

Hello Jill. Roslyn Willis (nee) Whitley here. I was at NB with Mr Corner as Headmaster from 8 to 11. It was in 1959 to 1962. I remember him with kindness.
I failed 2nd half of 11+ so went to Richard Hind – 4 very unhappy years. However I went on to teach at University and write text books and run my own company. I care to forget the teenage years at RH but remember Norton Board with fondness.

Just wanted to sat I am a Speedway rider these days for the GP Teams. I am from down under Aussie as well and always backwards and forwards too and all over. I have gone a long way in life and still do plus work at the milk factory in Church Road and plastics shifts so not bad in all and keeping myself busy with my Speedway racing up and down the country. Hello I am David Thomas. I started there in 1971 up 1975 I was only three years old then left when I was 7 years old and went Billingham day. But when I went there it was great I remember Mr Lightfoot and Mrs Bell and the fish chips shop sweet shop call elcoates burns dairys peckitts sweet shop and dinner lady call Mrs Wilcox. I had school mate all so call James Henry he was my best mate was in the nursery the but in the infants I remember all that.

I attended Nogger Board school in the sixties and have fond memories of it, especially the day it went pitch black at noon and flooded the high street. I remember being in Mr Lightfoot’s class, and Mrs Higgins, and Mrs Brown too, who lived on the high street. I remember Dave and Jill Colpitts, Phil Thomas, Anita Roddam, Graeme Duncan, Colin White, etc. Great times, though we didn’t know it at the time.

I remember Mis Higgins….. always wore a blue ‘duster” type coat. She was ancient, bless her.

I was at Nogga board from 1958 to 1964 and had good teachers as some lady teachers were, Miss Champion, Higgins, Waller, Pott in the infants then in the juniors had Miss Wilson, Mr Greener, Mrs Brown and Mr Lightfoot.

Just came across this post mentioning my father, Mr Greener. He had taught previously at Billingham C of E (the school on Billingham Green), but moved to Norton Board when my mother was ill. I went for a while to Norton Board Infants, but would sit in the back of my Dad’s class after school to wait for him, playing with coloured counting bricks. He returned to Billingham after my mother went into hospital long term, and I went to infants and junior there including 2 years in his class (an odd setup!).
He was a great storyteller and, on Friday afternoons, used to tell stories from Jungle Book or Robinson Crusoe, bringing the characters to life, adapting his voice to each of them. He also used to do half the RE classes, turn on turn with the Billingham vicar Mr Simpson, who used to drone on about catechisms etc, and bored the pants off us kids. Dad just told bible stories in the same relaxed way.

Hi, I went to Norton Board but I think I left the year before you in 1970 ,my school mates amongst others were, Michael Twigg , David Storey , Tony Harrison , Geoffrey Walker, Stephen Thomas , Colin Tiplady and many many more. Great times indeed , the last teacher I had at Norton Board was Mr Lightfoot ,before that there were Mr Thompson ,Mrs Pounds and Mrs Mcollins.

Metcalfe Street was off Norton Road, opposite Burns Dairy (Arrow Taxis) from the railway line, halfway down it joined Bolsover Street, which was behind the Malleable Club, Metcalfe St was knocked down, but I think Bolsover St is still there.

Hi, i was born in Napier Street, it was at the bottom of Bolsover Street, I remember being taken over to the Mall Club for the Queens Coronation, the only family I can remember were the Hopes who lived at top end of Bolsover Road, Tommy Hope was an ice-cream man, he road a bike with box on the front, still don’t know how ice-cream & lollies kept cold, so, so long ago, I was born in 1947 and my mam and dad lived with dads sister Lizzie Evans & husband Stan, they moved to Ragworth when it was built at 56 Doncaster Crescent, no kid on the estate was turned away when children’s hour on the TV started, aunty Lizzie had the only TV on the estate, any one remember going in aunty Lizzie’s to watch TV?

I went to noggy board from 1974-79, i was taught by mr mears (who got into trouble when i went home and said ‘kinky’ to my parents who went mad when i told them he’d told me the word!!,the only thing i remenber him teaching us was how to brush our teeth? (he had just bought a new tooth brush), i remember country dancing with ginger trevor (cant remember his surname), the best thing i remember was school dinner time when we got white ice cream with a toffee/syrup sauce served by judith hart (stephens mam) ahh happy days!!

Thats got to be Trevor Mulchay from over Albany! I remember the smell of chips from the bake’n’take chippy just outside the school and Elcotes sweet shop just a bit further down the High Street. Very happy days!!

Bob was the Head Teacher when I went there (to teach) from Oxbridge Lane in 1974 and he lives on the next estate to me. I can see his bungalow from my house!

Mr Brown was Headmaster during my time at Norton Board. I later came to realise how respected he was within the village.
He could be/was strict and could be equally relaxed and engaging. No-one was scared when he came into our classroom, but were scared if they had to go to his office.
I also found out much later that he followed any news of ex-pupils.
He certainly set a standard as far as ‘role-models’ go.

My sister Margaret Simpson and I both attended Norton Board School. She was there from 1943 or 1944, and left in 1949 when we moved to South Bank. I was there from 1945 until 1947 when I went to Holy Trinity in Stockton. My second cousin Jeannie still lives next to the school, her mother Jean, my cousin, and various other Norton cousins, still Norton residents, were also students. I met a lady from my 1946 class, outside her home in Norton High Street in November 2009 on my last visit to the UK. We were in the same class, she gave me a class photograph which I still have. I passed Peckitt’s shop on my way to school, there was another sweet shop directly across from the school entrance on the High Street. I have only happy memories of Norton and I love visiting.

I attended ‘Nogga Board’; and left about ’73 for The Albany school (worst event in my life so far).
I remember Mrs Kane who had a cane, and how she broke it on a boy named Garry? and he brought in a new one the next day… Ohh he was the most hated boy in school for quite a while!! I remember Mr Hamell who used to threaten the use of his plimsol on the boys, at the time I thought he had size 23 feet. Mrs higgins was so sweet… just adorable. Mr Brown was everything a head teacher should be, he knew everyone and their families, and everything that went on in that school. I met him when I returned to the area in the 1990’s and he remembered me and my sisters, he looked exactly the same. I adressed him as sir, would I have dared to address him any other way? I recall swinging on the door frames in the girls loo with friends, and running and slamming the door to the sound of ‘Nanny’s coming!’. The dining hall, sheesh! I once pushed my tray on the table, and then walked straight out of the hall, to be followed by a teacher, who gave me the telling off of my life for leaving the dining room in such a rude manner, until I revealed the bee sting on my palm, and my explanation of not crying at the table, and disturbing everyone. I seem to recall a boy called David Yeoman, running into an open window while playing football and knocking himself out.
The free pears were wonderful, made the walk to school easy for a whole month. We did have to use the side entrance to enter school when I was there, and there were new? prefab buildings, I am sure Mrs Kane’s class was in one of them. Ohh and Lizzie my mate (hated being called Lizzie Dripping), the teachers were always threatening to split us up… Ohh and Elcoats the sweet shop, run by two sisters I think, absolute heaven for 1p. Great memories of a great little school.

I was here in the 70’s too and remember that we weren’t allowed to use this entrance. Instead there was a modern inturned gate at the other corner of the frontage next to the (cobbled) goods entrance. The school premesis was split into three; Preschool, infants and juniors and you had to stay in your area and not mix at playtime. I remember Mrs Bell who had her hair in a bun, the swarm of ladybirds one summer and getting an old leather football in my face while waiting outside in the dinner queue! Oh and there was the incident with the cricket ball… and the climbing frame. Seems the place was jinxed – or was I accident prone?

Attended the school in the 70s starting in the Nursery right up until leaving to go to Albany Comprehensive in 1980. I can remember Miss Grainger (looked like what we would nowadays consider to be a Goth.) My teacher was Mrs Skollen, who won the ‘Spot the Ball’ competion. Her prize was a Ford Transit Motorhome. She came in with a packet of Fruit Pastilles for the class. In the later part of my time at the school I was taught by Miss Endersby, Mrs Fletcher, and Mr Hammond. Fridays was the sports day, and having only concrete playgrounds, we were all ceremoniously marched to William Newton. Mr Brown the headmaster later married one of the teachers in the nursery (please correct me if this is wrong)

I went to Nogga Board infants & juniors until I started Norton Comp in 1974. I remember Mrs Kane, Mr Brown headmaster, Mr Flower, Mrs Bell who was Dekka Bells mam. I remember melting crisp bags on the heater flue. My brother Dave & sister Andrea went there too. It brings back memories when I walk under the arch even now. Remember Elcoats sweet shop just up the street was great.

Derek your Mam was my second teacher at Norton and I’m sure you were in the same class. You lived roughly opposite the bottom end of the school on Tanners Bank. Colin, we remained mates at Norton Comp and you became a rockabilly!.
I left Norton when I joined the navy but I have no regrets about where I grew-up or the people I grew-up with.
I now live in Netherlands so never get back to Norton but I’d kill for fish & chips or to revisit Elcoates underground sweet shop.

I went to Norton Board from 1945 to 1952. Remember Miss Potts from the Nursery School, then Miss Higgins (lovely dancer), Mrs. McCollins, Mr. Lightfoot, Mr. Thomson (Tombuck), Mr. Corner became Headmaster around 1950, and Mrs. Kelly was Mayoress of Stockton. Pecketts was the sweet shop on Tanners Bank, lovely sherbet and spanish for a penny!

Joyce, I was there a couple of years before you started. Tombuck always taught the ‘top class’ in my day, though there was also a younger Mr Thompson. A Mr Fawcett (?) wasn’t there long. The head was ‘Pom’ Roberts. Tombuck and Pom were the heavy mob, very efficient in their old-fashioned way but not to be messed with.

I went to norton board 1945 to 52 boys I remember Anthony Hope, Eric Butler, Joseph Hawkes, Fredrick Timms (was killed at home by accident playing with a cricket bat) and Dorothy Blackmore. One teacher I remember was Heseltine he was a goal keeper for Stockton team and Miss Fletcher who lived up near the fire station. Wish I knew more, we had a photo taken in the yard if any one still has it. I am 71 now and sill love Norton. Raymond Ford, Jan 20014.

I went to Norton Board from approx 1968 to 1974. Headmaster was Mr Brown (still around as of 2009). My first teacher was Miss Jump, then Mrs Potts (Pots & Pans). I also had Mrs Fleming for two years, (whatever happened to her?). I had 2 Mrs Bell’s for two years – same name, but no relation. My last teacher there was Mrs Stearman. I remember Mr Johnston (Sp.?) was the custodian. I also remember Mr Hamill and the two Mr Thompsons (father and son). Mr Thompson Senior passed away while I was a student there. We all got pears every time the trees bore fruit. Many many other stories I will never forget. Happy Days… Moved to Kent in 1974, then back to Thornaby in 1976. Moved to Canada in 1978.

I went to Norton Board from 1961 or 62 until about 1968/9. I too remember Miss Higgins who sketched us in infants. We were also taught to dance in the hall. The teachers were lovely. I remember Andrew Chapman, Anne Wilton, Janine Crosby, Jackie Waller, Mark Chilten, loads of others too. Elcoates the sweet shop nearby was magical.

I went to Norton Board school until about 1978 when I was about five or six years old then I moved to Lancashire. I don’t remember much about it but I do remember the name Mrs Potts, and I remember we used to do mathematics every morning and when I went to my new school I was one of the best in maths, I still am quite mathematical and I am sure it is down to this. Mrs Potts must have been quite nice because I only have fond memories of the time. Now I have my own family it makes me think back, shame I can’t remember more.

Re: the query from Jenny Hall about the opening of the Berkshire Road site. I went to Norton Board at that time and we moved from the High Street site around about Easter 1982. I remember being in my third year class (Mr Reed’s) for a few weeks in the new building before being in Mr Hamill’s class for fourth year. I left primary school in the summer of 1982. Sorry, unsure of the actual date that we moved but it was definitely 1982.

Hi Victoria, I’m Peter Read who taught you at Norton Board school and then after the move to the new school next to the A19. Norton was my first school as a teacher and I have some very fond memories of it. If you can list some of the names of your classmates and what they ended up doing I’d love to find out. Also if you have any class pictures. I live in Romania now and have for 5 years. My daughter lives here with her husband and baby.

I can remember going to this school, my tutor was Mrs Carter. She always looked over her glasses at you. Yep Mr Brown was the head teacher when I was there. Can also remember a tall teacher who had a beard, think it was Mr Hilton. We all played rounders in the school yard at PE time and I never forget the time me and Julian Ellis used to hit the ball into the high street from the school yard.

I went to this school in the 70’s, it was just for one year before I was transferred to Glebe when that opened. I remember the name Mr Brown as headmaster but don’t remember seeing him, mind, I was only 4!! The HM at Glebe was also a Mr Brown but I couldn’t say if it was the same one. Only one name of any kids spring to mind, and that was John Kent – he didnt follow me to Glebe, but we played together at playtimes. I remember being dropped off at the arch though, it was quite daunting for a kid… my eldest sister went here as well but she is 4 years older than me.

Looking back at memories of childhood days this photograph certainly brings back a few. One thing I remember is always listening to the sound of the dinner bell when we where released for an hours freedom to rush off to our nanas, enabling us to catch the next episode of playschool and the pipkins – me, Nigel Clark and Deborah Clark.

I went there from sept 64 til june 70. Lots of good memories. I”m surprised how hard it is to find photos of the place.I remember Mr Corner threatening me with the the cane if I didn”t polish my shoes. I remember the sweet shop behind the school (Tanners Bank side), very shabby but sweets were 5 a penny. Black jacks, aniseed balls and sherbert dips. In school we would get the cane if we were naughty. I went through the infants then Juniors there and left in early 1960s.

I,too, started at NHS (as it appeared on the badge of my cap) in 1970 and I think I played in the football with David Barnes (left wing I think). We were beaten to the championship in 1977 in the last game by Fairfield 3-5. That game was played at William Newton school which had been annexed to Norton High Street in 1975. In the early infant school days I was taught by Miss Granger (mini skirts, boots and lots of make-up) and I remember making tie-dye T-shirts.

I attended Nogga Board from 1970 onwards.The Headmaster”s name was Mr Brown,the only teachers I remember were Mrs Potts(pots and pans and watering cans) and Miss Carruthers(mini skirts and Knee length boots). The school site ran from the Arch entrance to half-way down Billingham Road (Tanners Bank) where it finished at an orchard which was behind my classroom. I think there is a doctors surgery there now.

I attended Norton Primary School from 1952 to 1957 when my family emigrated to Canada. I remember the entrance well and the nearby chemist”s and Mr Cocking”s grocery shop. Can anyone tell me where I can find pictures of the school as it looked in the 1950″s?

I attended “Noga Board” as we knew it from 1955 til 1960 and went to the nursery school which was on tanners bank as I seem to remember. The only teacher I can remember was Mr Corner the then headmaster.Who could forget him. That entrance to the school is a living part of “Nogga Board” and of Norton.

Mr. Corner was my much-loved father. He cared deeply about the school and wrote plays for the children to perform. He also designed the backdrops. Do please tell me about him. He died in my house in Vancouver, Canada, in 1971. Is it true that he was called “Pop Corner”?

Very true Jill he was Pop Corner to my generation in the early 50’s. I remember he used to come in to our classroom and give us a spelling test and we were in awe of him.
Many years later when I was teaching at Harrow Gate Junior School his wife (Grace? Gracy?) came to complete her teaching career with regard to her pension. We got to know your dad as adults when he picked her up every night. I once mentioned the “dreaded” spelling test and she replied that she told him off about it. Your mum was also a lovely person as was your dad especially when we met him at Harrow Gate Juniors!

I have fond memories of your father. He was a stern disciplinarian but always very fair. When I was in Mr Hazelton’s class in 1954, he used to come in once a week and give us a mental arithmetic test. Including the pence times table. God help you if you didn’t know that 50 pence was 4 shillings and tuppence!
I sat the 11 plus in 1955 and was in the B class. Not many in the B class got to the Grammar School. Only one did – and it wasn’t me. However I passed part one – and your father gave me great encouragement – and when I failed part 2 he was very sympathetic. The same year, I won a prize for being a good pupil and he presented me with a book called Tas and the Space Machine, which I really enjoyed.
I then went to the Sec Mod, Frederick Nattrass but at the age of 13 passed an exam to go to Newham Grange, where there was a GCE stream. On my way to school, I sometimes would meet your father, I believe he lived in Studley Road. He was very pleased that I’d got the Newham Grange and would always ask how I was doing. He would no doubt have been very pleased to learn that me, an 11plus failure, ended up with a BSc Hons from the London University. Yes – we did call him Pop Corner!

I went to the school from 1959 to 1962. I too failed 2nd part of 11+ and had 4 unhappy years at Richard Hind before going to Billingham Tech. I progressed and went on to teach teachers to teach and write text books! I remember Mr Corner. Elcoates sweet shop, down some steps into a long corridor of a shop, is a house now I think.

YES I REMEMBER MR CORNER he took over from pop roberts.He was very strict and we were all afraid of him especially his mentsl arithmetic tests each day.Im sure he was a very caring man tho we didnt see it that way. Craig Allison

My Great Grandmother Elizabeth Maria Nixon taught at Norton Board School in the 1880s along with her colleagues Miss Sallie Mills and Mrs Mary Ann Sidgwick. I have her handwritten poetry book in which she has written memories and doodles of her time at the school. If anybody has any details of these early years I would be interested to learn more.

Thanks Jeff for confirming year. I am caretaker and have been for 18 yrs now. The caretaker of Norton school knows of you, Steve Surtees, he agreed about sports etc. I just wish somebody would have some photo”s that would be great. thanks again.

I left Norton Secondary School (Albany School)in June 1981, the Primary school was still our school playing fields, used as an athletics track and long jump and high jump. This makes me think that the primary school was being built in the summer of 1981 and into 1982 for the first intake in September 1982

I am a teacher at Norton Primary School. We wanted to have a celebration connected with the school but were unsure of the date when the Berkshire Road building was opened. We thought it was our 25th anniversary in July 07. We have conflicting opinions on this – some say 1978. Can anybody help us? thanks.

The arch made a canny shelter for the Mums who did “the school run” – in those days on foot! Mam would give me a tube of Smarties as I went into school and I learned to scoff the entire tube while walking up that alley. If you had any sweets in your possesion by the time you reached the top, the “big boys” would relieve you of them as you passed into the yard.

The school did not get demolished in the 1970s. I was in the last year of juniors when the new school opened 1982. The last day at the old school would have been around july 1982.
