  1. These 1940″s scenes had not changed by the middle fifties. The building in front of the Town Hall contains the lavatories. I think that the first supermarket in Stockton (around 1958) was on the corner of Bishopton Lane/Norton Road. I remember a lady handing our wire baskets to incoming customers, and telling us to go round and help ourselves. Otherwise we would have no idea of what to do! The lady looked very upset.I think that the owners (British Home Stores?) must have gotten rid of about ten women who were previously serving behind the counter. It is said that supermarkets took a long time to come to the UK becase we had rationing until 1954.
