My mother used to be a manageress in a Gallons shop. I don’t know which one. Her name was Joyce Mary Simcock or her married name was Joyce Mary Harrison. If anyone remembers her I would like to hear from you.

I cannot remember a Gallons shop at 4 Swarthmore Terrace (adjoining the Sadlers hotel at number 2 Swarthmore Terrace), when Gallons ceased trading there it probably became Jaques the fruiterers and greengrocers whose rented shop had the O bus stop directly outside its door, further up 25- yards away was another bus stop known as the United Bus stop, further on Rounds the Chemists.
Swarthmore Tce was called Mandale Road by most locals, the houses and shops in Swarthmore Terrace adjoined Mandale Road, and faced the Nash Conservative Club. (Bob Tate Manager. 1941). I seem to recall a Gallons shop was situated 50 yards past the Queen’s Cinema, which might have been purchased by Broughs, my sister Anne Wilson RIP, worked for Brough’s, she left there to work for Pumphreys Icing Sugar Works over the road. Information on Gallons Group is hard to come by, they were a Leeds Company with warehouse in Brown Lane, Leeds, situated 400 yards away from the Leeds United Football Ground,

Gallons had a large number of shops in and around Yorkshire in the late ’60s. They were all served from the Brown Lane Warehouse and included THRIFT and, SAVEMORE, as well as Gallons, We were, in the ’60s, opening new store regularly and before I left in September 1967 there were about 300 Branches. Because the Warehouse became a Morrisons Dairy in 1970 I assume the shops also became a part of the Morrison business. David Robinson would know exactly what the arrangements were. David lived in Leeds in the ’60s and early ’70s. but I last time I saw him was in August 1970, just before Morrison took over and he moved to Sheffield.

Gallons Of Leeds… I worked at the main Warehouse on Lowfields Rd./ Brown Lane in 1967 as a Buyer. David Robinson shared the Office and when I left to Train as a Teacher David remained until 1970 when Morrisons took over. David and others moved to Sheffield and the warehouse became a ‘Dairy’ for Morrisons for several years. Today ‘ Evans Halshaw’ has a large Car Showroom on the site.

I worked at the main warehouse in Leeds 1962 started making up orders and when quiet repairing the delivery cycles from all the UK shops wonder what happened to company

I lived in St Leonard Street and often used to go to Gallons for groceries for my auntie in the 1960’s. You could ask for slices of meat cut to a certain thickness – you just had to say what number you required and the assistant would cut it for you. Near to Christmas you could ask for the hoops from barrels and we would wrap crepe paper all around them and hang them up as a Christmas decoration. I still get quite nostalgic when I drive down Mandale Road and George Street remembering the varied shops you could visit. You didn’t have to go to Stockton then but it was always nice to go on a Saturday and stroll around the huge variety of stalls. Happy days.
PS. Does anyone remember a shop called Midorca House on Norton Road – past Maxwell’s Corner?

My auntie Ann Jarrold from Wistow who lived with my mother in Leeds worked there, she has just past away at the age of 94 she told me about her time there.

I have now found the addresses of Albert”s shop. The Thornaby branch was at 4 Swarthmore Terrace, which I think was off Mandale Road. The shop in Bowesfield Lane was at either 32 or 25, depending on which Ward”s Directory you consult. Mary Ellis was my mother. Newtown was her first teaching post and at one time she had her sister ( Edith Margaret, known as Peggy ) in her class. She later became Mary Atkinson.

Mr.& Mrs. Ellis and their two daughters, Mary and Margaret, one of whom was a teacher at Newtown infants school, lived in Craigweil Crescent, exactly opposite to us. He was an inspector for Gallons at this time, 1930s.

My grandfather Albert Ellis worked for Gallons and was in various shops around Teesside. My Mum talked of one shop they lived above in Bowesfield Lane and another in Thornaby. Later he was an Inspector for Gallons. I would be glad to hear from anyone who might have memories of him, as I am currently researching the family.

My father told me he used to stand in the queue for parish assistance which was given in the form of groceries from Gallon”s shop. Being on the parish or on the dole was referred to as being on “The Pancrack” because a large part of your groceries was made up of eggs.

My father lived in 9 Donald street off Oxford street and probably went to Tilery school, I know he worked at Gallons on the corner of Tilery road & Norton road as the photograph shows in 1922 when he was 14 years old, quite a lot of staff for a small shop but by the look of it it must have been busy.

It may have been a small store but Gallons at its peak had over 200 storesow. Does anyone know when and why they closed down ?

The first grocers shop was owned by William Gallon on Vicar Lane in Leeds in 1851. Frederick Gallon took over and the company ceased to trade after his death. His son Richard Gallon was living in Jersey. Why the business closed down is a question that I need to find the answer to since this is part of my family history. Richard was my Grandfather. In 1966 Gallons of Leeds had over 300 stores. The main warehouse was on Lowfields Rd/ Brown Lane. In 1970 Morrison’s took over and the staff from the Leeds Warehouse moved to Sheffield. The warehouse remained but was used for several years as a Morrison Dairy. Evans Halshaw now has a Car Showroom on the site. Leeds United was only a ‘stone ‘ throw’ away. I left in 67 having worked with David Robinson as a Buyer.

I see that the gentleman related to the Gallon’s the Grocers family is called “Brough’ and recall that as a child, that there was a similar chain of grocery stores around local towns that also bore that name. There used to be a very large branch on Yarm Lane which had a self-service restaurant above. This I believe closed in the late 1970’s. Is there any tie-up?
