What a difference the Tees Barrage has made to the town. The “permanent high tide” effect greatly enhances the appearance of the riverside area and I am sure none of the redevelopment of recent years would have gone ahead without the Barrage in place. Water sports are now possible and it is marvellous to see the colourful sails of the small craft on a sunny day. The new rowing club facilities are well used, and we can even take a pleasure trip to Yarm aboard the Teesside Princess. I know that the Barrage has its critics, but when the regeneration of the north bank is complete, the appearance will improve again, unrecognisable from fifteen years ago.
