  1. The answer to this puzzle picture lies in the shield and the watch chains that the men are wearing. The top right hand corner of the shield bears the logo of the St John”s Ambulance Association. And most of the men have a St John”s medallion on the end of their watch chain. This medallion was only issued to people who had passed 3 examinations of the Association. It was carried to prove that a person was competent to render first aid to somebody who was injured. Most men tended to wear their medallion on the end of their watch chain. Several of the men also have a year “label” on the chain above their medallion. These labels were issued to show that the holder had successfully passed his re-examinations. One of the men has three labels on his chain, whilst another has two. So it looks as if this photo is of a team from a branch of the St John”s Ambulance Association who have just been successful in a competition. (Many thanks to the Picture Stockton team for providing a high resolution image to study.)
