Regarding this photo and the query from Anne Harris (nee Young). Bill Young did indeed live in Belmont Avenue, and was a member of 1st Wolviston Scout Troop, as I was. I went camping with Bill many times. Other members of the troop from Belmont Avenue were Terry Crowe and the Hancock brothers, Bob and Brian. The boy mentioned as 4th from the left, front row, does not resemble the Bill Young I knew, however, who would have been about 14 at the time of the Coronation, and was a much sturdier individual. It is difficult to make out the face though, so I could be wrong. I would imagine Anne, that you are related to the Bill Young from Belmont Ave. If so, I can send you a picture of him with the Scout Troop on a camping holiday, circa 1954. You can get my email from the Picture Stockton Team.

I was born at 10 Buxton Street and lived there until the age of 17 or 18, I knew the Harburn family very well. A lifetime friend of mine, Denis Umpleby, lived at No.4 Buxton Street which was situated off Garbutt Street just before the railway crossing that went into Portrack. With regard to Billy Young he did live in Billingham, cannot be certain of the actual address.

Did Billy Young live in Belmont Avenue, Billingham and, if so, was he involved with the Scouts?

John Nicholson was a cousin of the Harburn brothers (Bill, Albert & Bobby) who lived in Buxton Street, Portrack. John’s father Jack was the trainer at Stockton Rugby Club in the forties.

I was at RH from 1949 to 53. I left at the end of the 4th year in 1953. Ken mentions the wearing of short trousers. When I left there was a boy going into the 5th year who was still wearing short pants.

I believe John Nicholson did live in the Oxbridge area, however I cannot be specific about the street.

Ken Sawyer is correct Mr Abbott is the teacher in the photograph, I think his first name was either Ray or Roy. I shall attempt to name as many pupils in the photograph that my memory will allow. Back row; John Nicholson, Alan Pattison, Ronnie Ibbotson, Malcolm Allison, Billy Hurren. Second row down; ??, Tony Sayer, Barrie Lidster, Brian Middleton, ??,??, Alan Brant. Third row down; Barry Atkinson, John Robson, Peter Smurthwaite, ??, John Boston, Alan Armstrong, Dennis Ridley, Alan Dodsworth, ??, ??, ??, ??. Front row; Alan Vasey, Hedley Barker, Gordon White, Bill Young, Barrie Marshall, Mr Abbott, John Gourley, Jackie Adams, Stephen Tucker, David Hooton & Bert Brumwell. I hope this will be helpful to Ken Sawyer and Dave Day. Perhaps there is another visitor to this website who can possibly put names to the pupils I could not.

I can fill in one or two names on the photograph as I was at RH juniors with them and remained good friends with Ronnie and Billy throughout our teenage years. Middle of back row; Ronnie Ibbotson. Far right back row; Billy Hurren. Far right 3rd Row; Alan Brant. 2nd right front row; Dave(Tich)Hooton. I looked for Alan Pattison and Barry Heath but couldn’t spot them. I seem to remember that we all wore short trousers until we were about 12 years old. Now even primary school wear long from starting school!

1953 and perhaps a remarkable thing about appearence is that 1st year pupils/students still wore short trousers. Nowadays some 50 years further on a high proportion of primary school boys wear long trousers. John does not name names here and I have been trying to remember the name of my colleague here. Abbott, I think, and teaching French.

I recently retrieved this photograph from Bill Young after losing my copy some years ago, Bill and myself are amongst the pupils in the picture. Many of the lads in this photograph are also to be seen in another picture taken about 3 years later which was posted on the website sometime ago.
