Hello. My name is Dave Jackson. Just found this site today.
Brings back lots of memories.
I used to live in Romford Road on the corner opposite the Stotts.
I attended RSM from 1963 to 1967.
I don’t live in the area anymore moved to Northamptonshire in 1988.
Still kicking myself when i went to Kiora youth club near Kiora, hall first night there i was asked by an attractive girl would i be her boyfriend which i accepted later on in the evening she came and spoke to me and asked if i was still her girlfriend stupidly i said no don’t know why i did that
I can’t remember her name maybe she remembers me all i can remember she had dark hair and wore glasses and attended RSM. Maybe she would like to communicate if anybody knows who i am talking about could this message be passed on please.
I remember most of the teachers names and pupils.
Now that i am retired and look back at memories it would be great to communicate with fellow pupils.
My email address is available from this site Picture Stockton Archive but alternatively if you require my email address i can give it to yourselves.
Hi. Christine.
I remember you also the girl with long blond hair and Jillian Jackson.
It’s great to hear from you.
Are you still in contact with any old classmates and do you still live in the area?
As in my previous post I moved from the area in 1988 to Northamptonshire.
Hope to hear a reply from you.
That photo certainly brought back memories. I was there from 61 to 64 when we moved to Scotland. I don’t suppose I will be remembered Sheila Mitchell I was friends with Susan Paul Freeman for years. Can’t say it was the happiest time of my life. Haven’t been back since I left but I’m going to make the effort and visit Roseworth next month. The school has been pulled down shame I would have liked to have seen it.
Brought back so many memories, my name was Diane Longley and my brother was Peter, I left after passing the 13+ but I was sad to leave. I was in Mr Wilson’s class.
Hi. ma West. Miss Farnaby. I remember you Eileen and your family. My father built the boat in the back garden. Loved the school and the friends I made. Kathleen Fish was a friend of mine, but could name a few more. Roy Parkin if you are reading this hope you are ok. Ella Simmons how is things?
Hi Audrey… not a lot of these comments mean much to me, I never made it to high school moved to Billingham in 66… but you did bring back a memory about your dads boat building marathon… I lived at the end of Rotherham Avenue (38). So many of my memories have faded having not been there for many years (40th anniversary in Adelaide this year) thanks for jogging that one. An idyllic childhood for sure.
Hi Audrey, was just flicking through the archives and saw your comment. I was in the same class as you at school and remember you well, we often used to play together. you might remember me, I was Pat Cutler then. I hope your dad finished building his boat and had many happy years sailing her. Other names you mentioned, I remember Roy Parkin, he lived almost opposite you didn’t he?. I remember Ella Simmons, Valerie Cook, Linda Hay, Susan Shephard, Eileen Hall and Sylvia Palmer, all in our class. Happy days.
Hi Audrey, I used to knock around with your brother, Tommy Thorpe. I remember the boat your dad built and the crane lifting it out of the garden and also what happened to your dad. There was a massive bell tent in the garden and we were all camping out in it when spooky things started to happen with things flying around and we all scarpered terrified at what was going on.
I can only recognise our headmaster’s face but don’t remember their names. Maybe I was too concerned about people laughing at my horrible hairstyle that my mother made me wear to school. Ha ha ha. Now living in Spain and I still remember Jean Fish making me yawn on the bus on the way to school and laughing at me. She just opened her mouth wide and I would yawn and she would do it again and again and keep me yawning…. ha ha ha. Good times as they made us learn and that I do appreciate. Specially English and history teachers. I am now teaching English myself in Spain and love it.
Hi Eileen.. I can remember you so clearly and I am so pleased to hear that you are teaching. No surprise there though as I remember you as a diligent and keen student in my R.E. lessons.
I agree they were good times and the best experience I could have had, straight from college and living on Roseworth. Will be pleased to hear more of your life story and discover where you are in Spain. Malcolm Danby and I had a reunion last year and 70 ex pupils attended.
Best wishes from Bob Jones.. your bro was also remembered.
Hi Sandra, Sorry it has taken me soooo long to get back on here again but I lost a lot of emails and purely a coincidence that I am back on here again, searching for history information regarding the truth we are not told about Hitler and WW2, etc.
I don’t really remember being a very good R.E student but do remember being 1st or 2nd in the class in English exams. I loved English and history and also enjoyed going out to collect frog spawn and other things down Blakestone Lane in a pond, that I vaguely remember now, though I remember the name of the area, which is rather strange.
If you want more information about my life here in Spain, etc, feel free to contact me – email the Picture Stockton Team: pictures@stockton.gov.uk and they will pass on my email address. It would be nice to hear from anyone that I was at school with then. I would love to know what happened to the Tye twins, they always treated me well and lived near where I lived in Radstock Avenue.
Hi Eileen now this a real shot in the dark, but are you the same Eileen Brophy who used to teach Drama at Cardinal Hinsley Boys school in Harlesden, London, back in the early 1970’s…? I so hope I am on target…!
Hi Eileen….still the old trick works…..I still do it to my staff!!!!!!! Only now realise what a good school our was…..I feel I wasted my time there…Jean nee Fish.
Hi Jean, sorry I lost touch with you too. Yawn, yawn, yawn!! ha ha ha, on the bus going to school, I will always remember you for that!! I honestly do not think we appreciated our school and the facilities. When I tell people here in Spain they say that such a state school is impossible and simply do not believe me!!
Hi my name is Sandra esch (nee Devlin) I was at school up to 1964. I now live in Canada I would love to here from anyone who remembers me. I also have a brother, John Devlin.
My name is Pauline Lewis (Mee) I was at Roseworth Secondary Modern until 1965. I now live in California, USA. I think I remember you, your name sounds very familiar. Whose classes were you in? I met Mr Robert Jones the last time I was in England, almost 2 years ago. My oldest daughter Donna lives in the Stockton area with my only Grandchild so far. My favourite teachers were Mr Jones, Mrs. Pipe, and Mrs West.
Hi Sandra we were pals, we cleaned our bikes tog in your alley way. I remember you falling off your horse and breaking your collar bone, I also remember your red hair. My name is Valerie Jones from Roseneath Ave
Hi Sandra, I was just going through old photos and comments, those were the days. Where has the time gone, girl/boys friends, marriage, children, grand children, retirement.
Regards: Steve McGann
Hi Sandra we lived back to back to you in Rostevor Ave you lived next door to the Wallice family not many of the older people left now nice to see yours and Johns name on here
Sandra I was your pal Valerie Jones we used to polish our bikes in your alley way I remember your bright auburn hair and when you fell from a horse and broke your collar bone
Hi Irene. I’m Mal Davies. I lived round the corner from you in Royston, on Ravenscar Cres. Do you remember Peter Hunnam and Maurice Shields, Colin Lawson (Wog), Tony Ozels, Dave & Tony Adams, Anthony Small and Lillian Samuels (now calls herself Lee). Had some good times back then in “Little Roseworth”
This brings back lots of memories, I remember Miss Farnaby, she looks lovely in this picture, she always gave the impression of being a tough cookie, but underneath it she was quite sweet. When I left school I went to Spain on holiday and sent her a rude postcard, she met my mum years later, and laughed and said how she had enjoyed receiving it, so she was human. Mrs West, well another character, but shame schools don’t have teachers like her. Again she was quite stern but demanded respect and got it. I used to see her quite often her and Des, life was not the same for her since he died, and I have just been told she has also now gone. I am sure most remember if Mr Laycock came into assembly it took ages to guiet students, but when Mrs West came in it was like a wave of silence. Really nice to see this photo.
Hi Jean Good memories? I remember being laughed at because of the way my mother made me wear my hair and my clothes too…. but those times are gone now…. Who was our excellent history teacher? A woman who created a great interest for me in history even today
I attended Rosworth Secondery School from 1959 – 1964, Mr Smailes was home room Teacher for
1st & 4th term. Mrs West taught Math and PE – had her for both. Her best words “I’ll box your ears”!
Mr Bell and Ms farnaby, very good friends. Mrs Pipe taught art and embroidery, made two nice pillowslips with her. Bottom row 3rd from left Miss Swindon, art. Her room was outside by the domestic science rooms and one day she did not turn up for classes. Mr Bell was math in the huts, just past the boys workshop – walked with a limp, liked to cane ,did not like Donald & David Tye. Memories not all were nice, I look at this picture and remember being scared to go to school because of these people but they all look so nice with smiling faces.
I ALSO WENT TO ROSEWORTH SEC FROM 1960 TO 1964, I WAS IN THE TYE TWINS CLASS, WITH DENNY BUTTLE, PETER HARDY ,ALAN POWEL, KEITH CHAPMAN, TOMMY CHARLTEN, BARRY LEWIS.
THE TEACHERS WERE TOUGH AND WE GOT THE CANE MOST DAYS, BUT LOOKING BACK THEY WERE GOOD DAYS TOO. MY FAVOURITE TEACHERS WERE MR JONES ,MR CAMPBELL, AND MR BIRD. ITS GOOD TO LOOK BACK…MY NAME IS IAN FOXTON. IF ANY ONE CAN REMEMBER ME PLEASE GET IN TOUCH.
When I went to school there was a Miss Morgan and Miss Farnaby who were cookery teachers.
Miss Farnaby is 5th from the right next to Mrs West who was the P E teacher at the same school.
Top row L to R; Mr Campbell, Mr Bird, Mr Lindley, Mr Preston, Mr Buckle, Mr Wilson.
Middle row L to R; ?, Mr Jones, ?, Mr Bell, Mr York, Mr Tiffin, Mr Smailes, Miss Askey, ?
Front row L to R; ?, Miss Ferguson, Mrs Pipe, ?, Mr Fordy, Mr Laycocok (Headmaster), Miss Farnaby, Mrs West, Miss Swindon, ?, ?
Is Mr Campbell (extreme left, back row) the same Campbell who taught Art at Holy Trinity
in the early fifties? He was a Scot who had played football for Queens Park in the Scottish football league. The one I remember at Trinity could pass a ball like David Beckham. ( Unless time has coloured my glasses with a pint tint!)
Top row 1st left is Mr Campbell, taught English. Mrs Pipe is bottom row 3rd from left taught needlework. Art teacher is bottom row 3rd in from right, can’t remember her name. Domestic science teacher is left of Mrs West.
Looking at that photo of the teachers of Roseworth Secondary Modern School I recognise
Mr Bird on the back row then Mr Preston. Middle row I recognise Mr Bell with Mr York beside him.
Front row I recognise Mrs West. Mrs Pipe was the art teacher and Mrs Farnaby was cookery teacher but I cant pick them out.
Two old Primrose Hill footballers back-row 2nd right Jimmy Buckle & middle-row 4th right Ken Tiffin, they both played outside left. Jimmy was in the team that won the Durham Cup in 1953 & Ken was in the 1961 team which won the Durham Minor Cup & North Riding Amateur Cup.
Ah schooldays! So my client agrees that my handwriting is atrocious. I had explained that following years of learning beautiful cursive writing at Roseworth schools, I ended up my first year at RSM in Mr. Wilson’s class. For some reason he decided he would make his mark by having his class stop using cursive and learn to write in copperplate. We wrote more slowly and had to drill and drill to lose our cursive script. Consequently I’m incapable of sticking with one style. Here in the U.S. and in this day and age my stories of teachers who used a weapon of choice seem like something from the Dark Ages. But fond memories of Mrs West, Mr Moore (Twink), “Jock” Campbell, et al. I’m glad they were tough enough to force some knowledge into my head.
