Although the pictures detail is faded; what appears to be a large group of folk in the middle of the High Street (where the Cross would later be), very much fits my father’s description of the ‘hirings’. I vaguely recall that this happened twice a year; once was Jan. 1st., when men would wait to be hired for a fixed period of work. The selection involved a tap on the shoulder and a plain statement of like it or leave it pay. Dad described it as treating men like animals.
