This photograph was taken outside the Methodist Chapel in Collingwood Road, Haverton Hill on Coronation day June 2nd 1953. It shows children in and around a horse drawn cart.
The building in the distance to the left is the original Billingham Council Office, this was replaced by a new office in Billingham town centre which is now being demolished. Notice a little lad to the left of the photograph who does not seem to be part of the celebrations…

Hi I wonder if anyone can help me, my mam and dad were married at St John’s church haverton hill, march 25th 1961, meaning they are about to celebrate their diamond wedding anniversary this coming march. There names are Robert and Margaret wood(foxton), I am trying to locate their Best Man, I only have a name, Jimmy Glover, who was in the RAF with my dad. I am trying to put together a special present, for them so if there is anybody who attended their wedding, could you contact me please. I know it’s a long shot as you will be in your late 70s, or 80s.

I lived in Haverton Hill as a child, 0 – 6 & 6 months (1957 – 1963), I went to Haverton Hill Infants, I remember a school teacher called Mrs white. I remember the Maxwell family in Marborough Road, the Sutherlands in Drake Road, the Prices in Drake Road. Moved to Billingham in Sept. 63, but Haverton Hill through n through, if they ever built an estate there I would be the first to back, wow look a Cowpen now an up market place lol. HAVERTON HILL (garden of England).

Hi My name is Kenneth (Kenny) Booth I was born in Haverton Hill on 5th April 1951 and lived at 21 Collingwood Road right on the corner of Marlborough Road. I went to HH School and lived in Haverton until 1962. If anybody remembers me I would be grateful fro an email. Thank you.

I’m George Morris. Lived at 43 st Vincent st. Haverton Hill and my sister was Dorothy.
I went to HH school and left about 1953.. My Dad was George Morris worked at ICI after the Army. He used to go in the ‘Middle House pub’ !
My mate was Bill Collier who lived in Marlborough Road HH.
Another mate was Raymond Warren of st Vincent street. He now lives in Billingham.
I joined the Coldstream Guards in 1955 and now live in Hertfordshire.
Be pleased to hear from anyone who knows me.

My name is Sydney Swan my father had the same name as me, we lived at 25 St Vincent Street. My dad worked at the ICI as a process worker. The family moved to Sydney Australia in 1961 I think.
I was surprised to see a google photo of Haverton Hill and its emptiness. I have lots of memories of the area especially of dads allotment.

Hi Heidi. I have a booklet ’50 years in Haverton Hill’ by Bill Kettlewell. It shows a picture of Clarkes the Butchers and many others of Haverton. Also Bill’s life in HH. It’s published by Stockton on Tees Education, Leisure and Cultural services..

What a wonderful picture, taken the year before I was born. Does anyone recognise anyone? My family (the Huzzards) were born and raised in Haverton Hill, we moved to Billingham when the demolitions happened when I was 12. I have such happy childhood memories of Haverton – all us kids played on the street together until it got dark and we would jump the beck behind our house and explore the old air raid shelter I think where the Council Offices were “Up the Hill”? I also remember our neighbour having chickens in the back garden and would often see them running around with their heads cut off!! We lived on Collingwood Road and I walked to the Methodist Church for Sunday School. I sang solo for a Harvest Festival service once, was so nervous! My nana lived on Rodney Street and my family moved to Hawke Street for a few years before our move to Billingham. Would love to see more pictures of Haverton, especially of the School!! (interior and exterior).
I love this site, keep up the good work!! It is a “bit of home” to those of us living away from England – we emigrated to Canada when I was only 23 but England will always be home to me.

Hello Carole, there is a book by old Havertonian Colin H Hatton called Haverton Hill : Port Clarence To Billingham which has many photos of Haverton, the ISBN number is 0-7524-3425-X, I got my copy from Amazon, included in the photos is a shot of the last house standing in Hawke Street in the early 70s,I hope this is of interest.

I’VE GOT THE BOOK TO KEEP. I DIDNT LIVE IN HAVERTON HILL BUT HAD FAMILY LIVING THERE. I WENT TO SUNDAY SCHOOL THERE AT ONE TIME BEFORE THE PICTURE WAS TAKEN. MY BROTHER LIVED AT HILL 60. I HAD AN UNCLE AND AUNT LIVING IN OLD HAVERTON HILL.

I was in living in 35 Marlborough Road at this time. My name is Norman Johnson and had three brothers and two sisters. I was 11 at the time. I remember benny huzzard in my class.

The Huzzards lived in 49 Rodnet Street. There was Helen, Raymond, Benny, Victor & I think one other. The Percivals lived next door at 47 Rodney Street with the Tomlinsons living the other side at 51 Rodney Street. I lived at 30 Belasis Ave.

My own school and family photos of this era, the 1950’s, are all in black n’ white… so it’s good to see a rare example of just how ‘colourful’ we all must have been, back then!

Well spotted sir, the ‘colourful’ part of the photo is obviously computer enhanced but I thought it was still worth sharing the picture, the story I was told was that the original was taken by a manager from Furness Shipyard using his new ‘German’ camera, going by the square format I think it was probably a Twin Lens Reflex camera which in the 50s was an expensive and state of the art bit of kit.

The photo was taken by the late Harry Best (section leader Draughtsman at FSB) my late father on his Voiglander single lens reflex camera on Kodak B&W film – I see it has now been coloured!
I am the third boy from the left in the heralds outfit. This is one of a series of 6 photos showing the children from Howard Crescent in the coronation parade (as mentioned boy on left was not from Howard Crescent – I lent these to Colin Hatton, but did not know it had been published.

I lived in Billingham at the time and well remember the day, there was a big fancy dress parade around the streets, the usual cakes and sweets and because we had an oval grassed area we had sports, the residents were mostly young married couples and they had a competition where all the women stood on a wall and held sheets in front of them and the men had to inspect their legs to see if they could recognise their wives, this led to all sorts of jocularity and ribald remarks, most of this went over my head at the time but my mother used to tell us the story frequently.
