  1. The teacher in the photograph of class 4b I think is Mr. Thompson – “texture Thompson” (he taught art and pottery as I recall) as opposed to the older “torture Thompson” (one of the best teachers I ever met) who reigned genially with threats of the “Chinese burn” and the occasional “swisher” – a piece of cane with electricians tape wound around the end, which we postulated contained lead-weights! I seem to recall “torture Thompson” teaching us Secondary school maths problems in primary school – and we enjoyed it!

  2. Kym Ryder – This photo of class 4b with Mr Thompson was definitely taken in 1955. (I am on it next to the teacher. I don’t recognise your name but I recognise almost all of the other names put forward. 🙂

Also pupil Karen Strawn and girl called Helena Kowalski (I think), she lived on Junction Road.
I also recall a Mrs Dunn and her son was a pupil there too. (They lived on Tanners Bank)
    Just remembered Vera Cole too.
Anyone remember the sweet shop in the High Street, owned by the Elcote sisters ?
Then there was the little shop next to the entrance…Coxes I think.
Mr Corner the head loved reading Sherlock Holmes stories to us all from a high chair.

    • Hi
The date of 4B would be 1954…I was born July 1945 and I would be about 9 years old so that puts it as about 1954. I am on the picture on the left of teacher Mr Thompson (then Marilyn nee Miller Wood). Now my friends call me Mandy..
A few more names: Top row can’t remember except that John Kent, (extreme right I think) was sadly killed age 12 when he fell while playing. Middle row: Ann ? Vera Clark, ??, ??, ??, Eileen Lamb, unknown boys, then Pauline Featherstone, Olwyn Binnie, Catherine ?
Bottom row: Glenys Jenkins, Joyce Hough, ?? Joan Berryman, me (Marilyn nee Miller), Mr Thompson, Stephanie Powell, Lillian Dixon, ??, ??, Anne Bradfield, ??, ??.
Apologies in any are incorrect. I will look forward to updates and further names.

      • I was in class 4B Mr Thompson’s Class in 1955 but am not on this photo. The reason why, is that this must have been taken after September 1955 and my earlier class left for secondary schools, in the July.
However, there are people that I recognise like Peter Binks and John Kent who lived near to me. John Kent’s tragic death took place on May 1st 1957. He and some friends had gone hiking over Eston Nab and they had climbed into a concrete structure which housed high tension transmission wires. He was electrocuted. Extremely sad. I very nearly went with the same party but decided instead to take the train from Thornaby and have a day at Saltburn with some other friends.

  7. I am in this Picture – I am in the middle row , on the left at the end. My name is Kim Ryder. My first Teacher was Miss Endesby and we shared a cabin with a Teacher… Mr Lightfoot. We had coat pegs and a sand pit between the two classrooms. I wish I could remember the names of my class mates.
Anyone out there can put an end to the Mystery of the date as it does not tally with MY time at Norton Board and I am in the picture!

    • Kim – If that is indeed you, have you noticed how your dress and hairstyle are different to the other pupils? Definitely more late sixties early seventies, where as the rest are dressed in fifties style.

  8. I’m certain that the tall guy with the vest in the back row about 6 from left is my father Kenneth Lewis or his brother Edward Lewis from Southfield Crescent …. my father was born in 1943 and his brother was brother 1944. Both are now in Australia .

  9. Could it be that this was taken in the sixties rather than the fifties – I’m sure that is me on the left of the middle row and I wasn’t born until 1960!

  11. Peter Sauvary is second row to the right of Mr Thompson”s head. Pete lived at 53 The Green in those days so Peter”s friends Brian Russell, Leonard Dietz and Bennet Keld may be on that photo somewhere. Mary & I were also taught by Mr Thompson. “Young” Mr Thompson”s specialised subject was Art and we knew him fondly as “texture Tom”. He taught us to experiment with colour and how to draw perspectives (enlightenment!) We still have the pyjama cases (with somewhat zany applique), from those days in his class!! I recall Peter wasn”t too keen on Mr Thompsons “Art” as a boy, but strangely enough Pete has become a bit of an Art Gallery buff and a fan of the great Impressionists!! The Texture Tom legacy!! Pete lives in Auckland NZ

  12. Old Mr. Thompson taught myself (born 1960) and my aunt Ann Sheraton (born 1944). I assume my uncle John Sheraton (born 1947) also attended the school – they lived in Norton, Cottersloe Road – but I do know that my uncle spent quite a lot of time away from school due to Polio. Can anyone tell me if my aunt or uncle appear on this photo? It”s difficult to know for sure.

  13. The teacher is “Tommy” Thompson who lived in the High St. at Norton. I attended Norton Board school from 1955 -1963. I was not in Mr. Thompson”s class. He was also known as “young” Mr. Thompson. There was an older Mr. Thompson ( whose son Michael attended the school ). The headmaster was Mr. Corner. I am not related to either.I lived in Beaconsfield Road
