In its heyday this was an local playground for many, the 2nd photo shows the famous ‘Sandy Bottom,’ a stream used for paddling about in. It shows how things have changed from the 1940s, when Leven could attract dozens of people on a Sunday afternoon. Walking up Leven bank afterwards to get to Thornaby, then the long walk into Thornaby by crossing the airfield runway was quite a trek for kids, I recall we passed the Commandants house on the right, then the Jolly Farmers pub, then St Pauls church, then the cornfield, Whats strange is the Pleasure Gardens in Acklam Road or the Littleboy Park was far better, yet they were ignored because Leven had a waterfall? We must have all been mad!

Many fond memories from afar [Australia]. Walked from Thornaby many times to this lovely place.
Hope to visit again sometime in the future.
