When I was a kid we used to go in Tom’s every Saturday to spend our 3d pocket money our grandad who lived at 22 Alverson Road gave us. Tom was a great man
Brings back memories, I Used to go to Tom’s as a kid, living round the corner in Norton Avenue – particularly remember going to pick up the Sports Gazette on Saturday tea times. Also went to the butchers next door – think we called it Ronnies. Used to do ducks and pease once a week, you’d take a bowl over to get it filled!
This is where I started my career in retailing, selling cigarettes and matches at the tender age of 9!!. Thomas Richards in the photo is my granddad who I never knew. My dad also Thomas took over the shop from him. I assume that Gillian Brookes is my long lost cousin.
At the Frederick Nattrass there was a boy in my class called Richards who was the son of the owner of this shop. I can’t recall his christian name but think it might be Cliff.

Every month I bought my ‘Railway World’ magazine at the shop on the right when it was a newsagent during the 1960’s.
