ICI Billingham 1962 Discoverer Course

A photograph showing the group that attended the Billingham ICI Discoverer Course in 1962. The course tutors were Ray Teigh, Al Hart and Frank Sterret.

This was a 10 day residential training course held at Stubb House at Winston near Barnard Castle. It was similar to ‘Outward Bound’ courses but modified to suit the
requirements of boys employed by ICI.

  1. I was at ICI Billingham on the Process Youth course from 1969 to 1973 & was fortunate to be trained/mentored by both Ray Teigh & Al Hart – great guys who gave me a great grounding both technical & personal which set me up for my future. I also attended the Discovery course in 1971 by which time it had transferred to Ingleby Greenhow – happy days at a time when ICI was a major employer & a great place to work.

    • I was also at ICI Billingham and attended Discover course 1967& 1969. Al Hart, John Fletcher and I think Paul Burrell were instructors, also at Ingleby Greenhow and we went to Patterdale in the Lakes for some of the course.

Got made redundant 1971 at end of Apprentice Fitter course

Happy days – ICI were ahead of their time.
