These are pictures of my Nana and Grandad, Ernest (Ernie) and Margaret (Madge) Temple when he was the Mayor of Stockton. Not entirely sure when, I’m assuming the 60’s? They went on to be the landlords of the (now demolished) Lord Nelson pub on King Street near Stockton Baths.

My list of Mayors stops at 1973. It is likely that the staff of the Mayors Parlour in the Civic Chambers will have earlier dated records. Meanwhile here is a list of the Freemen including Military Organisations of Stockton On Tees. The Civic Title Honorary Freeman of the Borough is given to someone in recognition of their services to the Stockton Borough.

They made an elegant couple par excellence as we see in these portrait photographs.
I wonder if anyone “out there” can produce a photograph of another mayoral couple (names long forgotten)? The Mayor was a widower and he invited his daughter to stand by him on official occasions as his Mayoress. She was a well-known and well-liked figure in Stockton’s day-to-day life, being a “clippie”, a bus conductress, on the Stockton Corporation buses. She was admired by all in that capacity,too, as she brought a smile to the faces of everyone and immediately brightened the days of her riders. Does anyone else recall her and her father?
On a lesser note, my grandmother, Alice Baker, was also a landlord (in a much earlier period) at The Lord Nelson, a single mother, raising two children, Lance and Vera Alice, (my mother) there and other pubs around Teesside. (The Eaglescliffe Hotel is one that comes to my mind, which I also recall was on the real-estate market a couple of years or so ago.)

Mayor Temple presented me with an award (also mates) in 1963 in Tilery Road school, so this councillor Temple must be one and the same?, this was for trying to save a life in the local clay hole near Swainby Road, with me, Freddy Newby, Franky Large & George Thomas all old boys from Tilery boys, I left school Christmas 1963.

Peter Temple was a good friend at Grangefield Grammar, we both went there after Richard Hind Juniors. We both hung around with Dave Eley & Colin Fewster all the way through school but sadly lost touch as we went our separate ways after we left. I remember Pete was a good footballer.

I think just RHS Juniors as GGS was a rugby school unless he played for a local team afterwards.

I remember Ernie, straight as a dye. I’m assumming your father is his son, was he named Peter? He was friends with another ex mayors son Goff Pragnall son of Alan.
Goff passed away too early in the early 1990s. He was a very good draftsman.

Think I recognise the guy, was he a fitter at ICI Billingham at the time? I don’t remember his name now, but he was on Stockton Council during the late 1950s and did become Stockton mayor during that period.

They were still in the Gas Hotel, Langley Street in the sixties.
