I suppose that the rough looking stuff on the road is horse manure, to give its more pleasant sounding name.
Back in the late 1940s and early 50s, when a horse had dropped its load opposite our house in St Annes Terrace, Portrack, I would be commanded to go out and collect it up with a small shovel and feed it to our garden.
For most people living in the town centres of Stockton or Thornaby this would have not been of interest, since very few of the working class houses had anything other than a tiny backyard. Our house in St Annes Terrace, built around 1935 had a reasonable garden, being the exception.We actually had a bathroom too!
