  1. My first job as an apprentice moulder at Heads Eaglescliff was making test bars, then went on to work with moulder Colin Castle (Cass) on gantry making small key segments, from where I worked the gangs of men worked in groups all the way up to top of foundry making the large segments, some would ram the drags, whilst others the tops, two moulders would core them up, then they would be cast, all day long piece work, fast and furious, I remember a man in the gang next to me who rammed the drags, his surname was Jobson, didn’t know then but he mentioned we were related, at the time I knew nothing of my Casey ancestry. Would any one who worked there at the time or any one know who this Jobson may have been? I believe he lived in Thornaby.
PS I served my time proper at John Downings iron foundry, time at Eaglecliff 1962-63.

  2. This is an Izod impact tester in which a weighted pendulum swings down and hits a short bar. With bars made of some types of steel, like those made by the Bessemer process, the bar will just snap… Where the steel is of a better qaulity, the bar will just bend.

  3. This machine was used for testing the test pieces which were machined by Don Thirwell and Jim Turner in the little machine shop on the side of the foundry.
