  1. The Farm was purchased by the Great Grandfather of the retired Farmer Ken Brackenborough who still lives in Wolviston. His Great Grandfather travelled to Wolviston from Lincolcshire, and was employed originally at Wynyard Estate, looking after horses. He later bought the farm and the family occupied the farm until it was sold and houses built on the site of the Farm Yard and outbuildings. Thompson Close, The original Farm House and cottage is still standing, on the right as you enter Thompson close.

    • Just to put you in the picture it was farmer Ken Brackenboroughs father Leonard who bought the farm, his grandfather Walter was the tenant farmer who came from Lincolnshire.

  2. I believe that the 1990’s Wolviston housing development Thompson Close, near the junction of Wynyard Road and Lax Terrace was the site of Thompson Close Farm. The initials A R and P stand for Acres, Roods, Poles or Perches which were the Imperial units of land measurement at that time. A Pole or Perch was 30.25 square yards or (5.5 yards x 5.5 yards) and there was 40 Square Poles or Perches in one square Rood, with 4 Roods to and Acre which equalled 4840 square yards. Thats in old money of course. I just knew my little 1950s book of ‘Things Worth Knowing’ would come in useful one day!

  3. I believe this farm was put up for sale on 15th Oct 1862 after John Thompson died. It was described as: ‘A farm of 50A 1R 21P. 2 tillage fields 7A 2R 10P and 8A 1R 28P. 5 grass fields 3A 0R 38P; 8A 2R 20P; 11A 2R 14P; 9A 1R 13P; 0A 3R 0P and a Plantation of 0A 3R 18P with a barn, stables cow-shed, fold-yard, cart shed, etc. Land is in excellent condition. Messrs William Thompson, Bolam and Thomas Tate of Wolviston will show the premises. Further details from Messrs. Newry, Richmond & Watson, Solicitors’. I would be interested to know where exactly it is and what the letters A, R and P stand for. Presumably is acreage?
