  1. I have vivid memories of this bridge, we called it the New Bridge. We lived in Norton and my Grandparents in North Ormesby and we would walk.
Mother pushing my Sister in the pram and me trotting alongside, the High Street, South Road, a track past Lamberts Farm (now the prison) and onto the new bridge road at Portrack where the roundabout is now. We often got there in time to see the Bridge lift then walk over and get on the bus the other side for the rest of the journey.
I was always amazed at how smoothly it worked, the huge cables and counter weights, the height of it all and probably set of my interest in engineering. A pity they bolted it down it could have been lifted for special occasions and I am sure would prove to be a draw for those who never saw it working.

    • Remembering this Bridge in its hay day, going to Ayresome Park on a Boro home match. Hoping that the Bridge was not up and missing the beginning of the match.
