There was a brief period of time, just a year or two ago, on the journey from Stockton centre toward Norton,( just as Norton Rd crosses Norton Bridge), that the tree-lined Lustrum Beck and Mount Pleasant Hill (site of the ancient Windmill) were fully exposed and must have looked as it was for centuries, i.e. when Stockton & Norton were two individual townships entirely separated by fields.
This was due to the simultaneous demolition of older houses on the hill, the levelling of the former Hills Doors factory-site on one side of Norton road and the preparation works to the recreation grounds on the other, the latter in readiness for the building of the Northshore Academy. Unfortunately, I didn’t manage to get a photograph!
When working at Hills during lunch times I’ve looked over the Lustrom Beck area and watched nature at its best. Water voles, kingfihers, different variety of ducks as well as the tiddlers swimming about in there.
