Sir Alexander Fleck

t3968Sir Alexander Fleck, KBE, FRS (1889-1968). During his life he held a wide range of scientific posts, culminating in the Chairmanship of ICI, from 1953 until 1960. He was created Lord Fleck of Saltcoats in 1961.

  1. A nice photograph and taken on the Billingham Synthonia cricket ground with what looks to be a Stockton Corporation bus going down Belasis Avenue in the background? The building on the right was the ICI Billingham Sports and Social Club, on the left hand edge is probably Billingham South Junior School and the small square brick building could be a store or possibly a pump house but all three buildings still stand today.

  2. My late aunt and uncle (Ivy and Hugh Mackay) knew Lord Fleck. They became wardens of Norton Hardwick Hall when it became a training centre for ICI. They lived in the Hall and I have many happy memories of the times the family spent there before it was, sadly, demolished.
