  1. This view shows the doctor’s house with bay windows on the corner of the High Street (the doctors when I was born were Dr Griffiths and Dr Fraser), and No. 122 High Street, Ridley House (owned by Mr Oswald Verity). My twin sister, June, and I were born in a cottage down Ridley’s Yard, and I can recall that at Yarm Fair each October there would be green roofed round caravans belonging to the gypsies right outside the big double gates. I was always very frightened of the horses and other animals they brought with them. Ridley House is a double-fronted house and goes a long way back down the Yard, now made into individual flats. I do not know when the the tiny cottage we lived in with my mother and older sister was built, but I do know that there was a door from the cottage into the main big house, as my mother was housekeeper to Mr Verity for a number of years.
