The Five Lamps were presented to Thornaby by three Justices of the Peace, Messrs. Whitwell, Anderson and Richardson in 1874. The original gas lamps were replaced by an electric five lamp standard during the 1950s. Can anyone tell me where I could buy any photos of Thornaby in its day?
We shouldn’t have to look at these photographs to look back, it should have been left as it was! It is unrecognisable now, I used to go through Thornaby on my way to work and thought it had great character, now its a way to get from A to B! The rest of Thornaby is OK so I don’t know why they had to turn old Thornaby into a motors only zone!
Historic memories
The five lamps leave me with fond memories of my past. My father Samuel Hobson was the last gas lamplighter in Thornaby. As for your question does anyone remember the watch and clock shop. Yes i remember it but alas no photos!
