I am not sure, but my Gran ( Florie Star) told me that each year, all the farmers came to Stockton for a Hireings sale, and she was paid to go and work at a farm in Teesdale for a year. She hated it, it was like being a slave she said.
A really super picture of the high street. As the piles of horse muck in the road show, trams were badly needed! And the flies and smell! I wonder why farm machinery had been brought in. Could it have been a special day for selling off farm equipment, carts and horses?
