The cannon featured in this view is probably the “Russian Gun” that the town received in November 1858. Stockton, like many other towns in the UK, received one of the many cannon captured at Sebastapol during the Crimean War. The cannon must have been moved to the park after it opened in 1893. The cannon lasted until the 1940s when it went as scrap towards the war effort.
