Surely misdated, given that photography was not invented until decades later. But certainly a very historic photograph..
The earliest gas lamps had to be very large as the gas inside burnt like a large candle flame. The development of the much superior gas mantle, in part a reaction to street lighting by electricity, came in during the 1880-90s and permitted a much smaller enclosure
