Stockton High Street is the widest in the U.K. and is offically measured from these buildings,the High Street at Marlborough is the second in width.
I think it was the building to the right of the Royal Oak that was Averys Scales in the early sixties. I”m sure I”ve seen a photo somewhere with Avery as a big sign across the front of the building quite high up. My uncle John Worsnop used to work for them and I remember as a kid getting a tour. The shop was on the groundfloor with little else on the floors above.
