Does anyone have info on 16 York which garden went on to Yarm Lane? The Cox family lived at 16 c1950 and next door at no.18 a Mrs M’clean lived. Any info would be great and a photo would be awesome. Leonard Cox
Martin and Jean, Thanks for the feedback. Bob Norlund
Bob Norlund – There is mention of Lorne Terrace in the comments with a photograph of The 266 A.T.C. Squadron 1945 – t1971 on the Picture Stockton web site.
Bob Norlund – I”ve looked at the 1899 map of Stockton and there is Lorne Street located around Ewbank Street, between Alice Street and Ecclestone Terrace. Nowadays the named Streets have been replaced with Courts. Ironically there is a Lorne Court down Yarm Road just past Hartburn Lane Junction.
Bob Norlund – I may be wrong but I seem to think that Lorne Terrace was somewhere behind what was Queen Victoria High School on Yarm Road. It”s many years since I was there so I may be wrong.
I need help with locating an old address on Yarm Lane. My paternal grandmother either lodged or worked at c/o W. Brand, 16, Lorne Terrace, Yarm Lane in 1908. Can anyone give me a clue to where exactly that may have been? In addition, she had been born at 13 Ann Street, Stockton in 1888. Can anyone give me a clue to where that street would have been? Thanks
Re VANES BAKERY When I left school aged 14 1934 my first job was an errand boy for MR Tom O”doherty off licence Oxbridge lane one of my deliveries was 2 bottles of Sunshine Rum now and again to Vanes bakers close to Rossi”s near the Empire. I still remember the price was 12 shillings and six pence a bottle. One of the girls working there told me that the rum was used in certain cakes such as christmas cakes. It was a first class bakery and well patronized and kept going for many years. I can still remember the lovely smell when entering the premises. I now live in Perth w. Australia have been back 3 times to Stockton but sadly all those shops and hotels are long gone but not the memories of them
Terry Dicken..Thank you for your information regarding the bakery shop. I think a fading memory probably caused a mix up between the two names.
If I remember I think the bakery shop was called Vanes, not Baines, it was next to Rossi”s the ice cream shop and next to I think it was Calverts the hat shop, we had a shop a bit further towards the Town Hall.
Does anybody have any knowledge of a Baines bakery shop situated, possibly next to the ice cream parlour, close to the Empire cinema. A former Stockton resident, Desmond Scrafton, now living in New Zealand, speaks of this shop where his late wife worked many years ago. Older members of my family, or I, can recall this particular shop.
To Ian Campbell in Oz. Does this bring back memories of your start to working life in Stockton. I do have a funny tale about it but maybe you should tell all. Which building was it that you worked in? I think it was a Bank with the name “Northern” in it.
