Hi there. Along time ago there is believed to have been a fire in the Black Horse pub does any one have a date for this and any more information? Thanks.
The Black Horse revives memories of great Friday nights listening to local groups in the music room in the early 60`s. It was also used by ICI personnel for various functions. I have attended many ICI Office Christmas parties in the upstairs room and staggered out well oiled to try and catch the last bus to Stockton. Unsuccessful attempts usually found me sober by the time I arrived home after the long walk in bitter cold weather. Happy days.
The Black horse is to the right of the photo, with Heslop Stout sign. Heslops Brewery chimney is on the skyline to the left, another Heslops brewery was The Grange at Norton. The oldest pub in Billingham is believed to be the Smiths Arms, a modern building, (1930s ) road-house style, built on the original Blacksmith alehouse, run by the smith”s wife. Village pubs had their “clique”, Billingham had The Blacksmith for Farm-Workers, Black-Horse for villagers and the Half Moon for travellers. When I.C.I was in full swing procees used the Black-Horse, office staff The Salutation (Sally) and management used the Smiths Arms.
Is the Black Horse featured? Is this the oldest pub in Billingham, if not which one is and how old is it?
