The ‘Tessdale’ referred to in the description of this image is the Teesdale Business Park which is on the former site of Head Wrightson immediately north of Thornaby railway station. Remploy relocated to the Alberto Street/Maritime Rd area until it finally closed for good a couple of years ago.
In answer to the question posed by F Starr. Teesdale is certainly upstream from Stockton.
It stretches beyond Barnard Castle up onto the Pennines and includes the settlement of Middleton in Teesdale.
I came across that area whilst researching my family tree on my mother’s side as her father was born in that area.
The picture shows the river looking downstream from a point somewhere in the Finkle Street area. The new river bypass road, which cut through the set of railway sidings, built around 1948, is clearly seen. The “improvement” of the north bank of the river had just about begun with the demolition of the Remploy building. Where did all the employees, who had various physical handicaps, then find work of which they were capable? And where is Teesdale supposed to be? I thought it was far up river!
