This scene is actually much earlier than c1920 as suggested. The photo featured one hundred years ago now in the 1906 handbook of the Tees Conservancy Commissioners, the port authority of the day (which moved offices from Stockton to Middlesbrough in 1902). Back in 2001 I featured the photos from this booklet on my TEESSHIPS website (http://www.teesships.freeuk.com/index.htm) and the vessel moored to the right could be identified as the DEE of London. Both George Robinson and David Asprey suggested the photo shows the Royal Mail Line”s DEE, 1871gt, following completion in 1902 at the nearby shipyard of Craig Taylor & Co., Stockton. We could not, unfortunately, identify any of the ships at Stockton Corporation Quay, other than to suggest the steamer with the rings on her funnel might be one of three ships in service at the time under the name of NEWARK.
