  1. The Tees from Stockton Bridge 1830 – Great rejoicing on the opening of this bridge 1771, but absolute gloom in Yarm, as it cut off its 500 year old sea access, to its butter, wool and lead trade. This was  reduced to barges off loading in Stockton, one is visible to the right of picture. “The Carrs” was Stockton”s race venue from 1724 till 1839, but the constant flooding and cancellation of meetings, including on a number of occassions a complete washing away of stands, saw it moved to Tibbersley Farm, Biillingham. This remote spot was not popular and in 1855, Lord Harewood donated land at Mandale Mill Thornaby, to become the Stockton Racecourse until the building of Teesside Park Shopping 1990.
