The Post Office, Dovecote Street

A view of nos 64 and 66 Dovecote Street. Number 64 was built as the Friends Adult School and has also been used as part of Stockton and Billingham Technical College. Number 66 was the old Post Office, built 1880 (architect Mr James Williams), enlarged 1894 and 1901, closed 1960 and moved to no 90 High Street. Photo taken in March 1984.

  1. When I was growing up, in Lawson Street in the 1950s, that newsagent’s was called Cordukes, and next to that was Fawcett’s the butchers.

  2. As mentioned by Carol, Dovecote street was originally named Mill Lane, this was due to a large working flour mill which was located at the bottom of the lane. Mill Lane school was then built on this site in 1872, standing for over a 100 years until demolished and replaced by a small residential complex. If anyone has photographs of the old victorian school I would be most grateful if you could submit them to this excellent site. Thankyou.

  3. Whilst researching Dovecot Street recently we noticed that the now number 68 Dovecot Street is Rowntrees Newsagent, but so far, this shop has been a newsagency as far back as 1906 never changing its “type” of shop in all that time, only its owners. This may go even further back but prior to 1906 this road was called Mill Lane and the numbers changed so research is ongoing… just how old is this shop, does anyone else know?
