In the early 80s I worked at the Terrace Restaurant which was on the first floor. And the Terrace Bistro which was on the ground floor. Beautiful building inside and out. The Restaurant was run by a fiery Scottish chef called Brian McKinney with chefs who were brothers, Steve and Phil Thompson who had learned their trade on the rigs. The Bistro was run by George and David – matching seersucker suits with white bow ties, Barry Manilow on full blast, outrageous humour continuously throughout the day. I washed up, ran errands, cleaned the toilets. made sandwiches – £1 an hour plus lunch, I was 15/16. Plus George and David’s brilliant company and humour.
Later the ground floor was occupied by second hand shops and a rather modern tailors shop run by a girl called Jackie who made wild shirts and suits for local bands and the Kirk crowd.
The same applies here too – the proper name of the office of the Registrar of Births, Marriages and Deaths is the REGISTER OFFICE, not Registry Office as so often miscalled.
