The Church School, Billingham. The school was built during the early 19th century and demolished c 1950. The view includes the village cross (erected 1893) and the Billingham Cash Trading Stores which were owned by Mr. H. E. Fletcher. c1900.
The building on the left was the joiners workshop. My grandfather, Henry Eldon Fletcher, rented a cottage and converted it into a lock-up shop as in the photograph. Later, he obtained the workshop and his brothers, who were builders, converted the workshop into a “modern” grocery and provisions store in c1905. The lock-up shop was then converted into the residence for the family and had what was probably the second flush toilet in Billingham.
My GT grandfather was born at 1 the green in 1900, his name was Albert Smith.
