Norton Ironworks

A view of three blast furnaces and a chimney at the Norton ironworks of Warner, Lucas, Barrett & Co. (1855-79), Station Road, Norton, shortly before their demolition. The first casting produced by them 1856 was for the bell Big Ben. The site was later occupied by the Stockton Stone & Concrete Co. Ltd (1899-1967).

Blast Furnace Norton Iron Works S807 – Its possible to-day to walk on the original slag-tip of Norton-Iron-works.now grass and Bush covered it projects out into Billingham Beck Valley at the end of Station Road/Calf-Fallow, Norton The last chimney was felled in 1916 as it was though it would be a guide to German Zeppelins. ‘Forest-Park Estate’ now stands in the main works site

During WW II Hills with over 60% female labour, many thousands of aircraft propeller blades and balsa ‘skin-sheeting’ for thousands of De-Havilland ‘Mosquito’ fighters and bombers and ‘Horsa’ gliders were produced MOSQUITO,the R.A.F.’Wooden -Wonder’ Aircraft. ——————————————- This can go into a Blairs or Hills picture
