  1. The boat in the foreground is a ship”s lifeboat conversion. These were popular in the fifties and there were always a few moored just off the boatyard on the south bank, hard by the bridge. Grandad built two, first the Daffodil that was similar to the one shown, then later the DandyLion. This was larger and had a six berth cabin forrard, wheelhouse and engine midships and a fully enclosed “saloon” aft. Gran said that Dickens and Devereux both owed their prosperity to “that damned boat” 😉

    • The boat in the foreground was built and owned by my Father Jim Tweddell.
      The boat was called the DAVIAN a combination of my brother’s and my name
      Brian and David.
      We lived in Thornaby Place until the street was condemned in about 1965.
      I now live in South Africa.

      • Were you the Tweddell family that was related to the Cuthberts who lived in Frederick Street & I think your brother Brian lives in Billingham.

          Yes the Cuthberts, Ivy Cuthbert was my Mother Doreen’s sister.
          My mother was head Cook at the Bader school for many years.
          My Father James Alexander belonged to the Boat Club in Thornaby place.
          My Brother Brian lives in Billingham, my Brother James lives on the Green in Thornaby.
          I came to South Africa by traveling overland with five mates we arrived after a five month trip through Europe & the Continent of Africa.
          I live on a place called Waterhaven Country Estate near Pretoria & provide a venue for Corporate hostpitality & Clay Target Shooting for the 225 members.
          I went to Arthur Head school, leaving at 15 years of age & worked for Ridely Lamb on his farm.

          • I knew your brother Brian who used to visit your relatives the Cuthberts regularly & your cousin Barbara, is she still with us?

            • In terms of Barbara Cuthbert she married a Stan Cartwright however having been in South Africa for 49 years I have lost touch with her.
              I believe she may be in a Home, Her husband Stan is still around.
