  1. Pleased to say that 96 years after this postcard was posted, the writer’s grandmother’s house at 25, Conewood St, Highbury, London from which she had returned, still exists and is in a beautifully refurbished condition complete with original wrought-iron railings to the front. It lays adjacent to Arsenal FC’s Highbury Stadium which is at the end of the street. I do wonder where in the Stockton area the writer’s house or home, given as ‘Charleville’ was situated. I also wonder as to what illness or injury had given the writer such a ‘bad day yesterday’ that forced her to ‘take it easy’ (this card was sent during WW1) But I see the writer had not been prevented from going for the Sunday ‘joint’ that morning, despite having an afternoon’s ironing ahead of her. With up to 4 postal deliveries a day in urban areas, the postcard was almost the equivalent of a text-messaging service at this time. I once owned a postcard circa 1900 that had been sent from Stockton, all the way to South Africa. It simply had the message ‘Weather has been hot here today. Have been baking.’ written on it! Fascinating stuff, eh?
