Castlegate – On the earliest maps and later drawings, this was the Stockton termini of the Stockton & Darlington Railway line, 1825, the remaining coal staiths timbers being alongside the site of the present ” H.M Endeavour” (replica) the original vessel being a “colley” (coal carrying vessel) , built in Whitby ) “The Earl of Pembroke” converted by Captain James Cook for his epic voyages Surely more should be made of these historic links in Stockton, for “I venture to say that what we”ve signed to-day , will make “Stockton A Town which changed the World ” George Stephenson 1823 on the signing in Stockton Town hall of the contract to build the S & D
