  1. I remember them in the 1930s I believe on Thursdays. It was the tradition that Friday’s cooked meal was fish following Roman Catholics practice.

  2. In the 1950`s and early 60`s my Father always bought a large dressed crab from the Staithes Ladies at Stockton`s Saturday market. I wonder if the stall-holders at that time were related to the people shown on this photograph. In my opinion nothing tasted better than the crab sold by the Staithes people – not even lobster.

  3. The lady with the crab stall was probable old Rachel Longstaff, she and her son Dick, ran the stall for years. They travelled from Staithes twice a week, and picked up their cart from the William 1V yard. They did”nt stay at home because it was raining!

  4. Staithes women, yes! But does anyone remember the woman who scrubbed celery in a barrel of cold water even in the bitterest of weather?
