  1. The Rev P Rudd Of St Cuthberts persuaded Villagers and local Gentry that every village should have a rally or cross marker. The cross of Shap Granite, made by Bowron , stone-mason of St Johns Crossing,Stockton cost £44 and erected 1893. The Prince of Wales, later Edward VII at Wynyard, was to dedicate it, on his way to Stockton Races. Comes ‘The Day’, School-children with flags, the villagers in their finery, the Gentry and Church cheer at the carriage procession. The Prince waves to the patriotic crowds and drives on to Stockton. The dedication was taken by Mr Heslop and a Mr Bradshaw, Reason Nobody had informed the Prince
