I listened to Bill (William)Rodgers in 1961/2 …later of the “Gang of Four” …campaigning for the Stockton by-election on the resignation of George Chetwynd. He stood on a platform built outside the townhall door and jeered and poked fun at the passing conservative “loudspeaker car” travelling south along the high street. George Chetwynd, MP for Stockton 1945 (following Harold Macmillon) until 1962, described Bill as a “young hot head” to my dad with whom he was friendly, saying “He will soon learn….!” when he got into parliament.
