  1. In the 1936 trade directory this address is also listed as the premises of United Automobile Services Parcels Department. Does anyone remember brewery vehicles using this site in the years after this?

  2. Kirk Brothers Castle Brewery, as it was originally called, was built by brothers William Kilvington Kirk and John Kirk. They were previously wine & spirit merchants and had a brewery in Hunters Lane, Stockton. The Castle Brewery was supplied with water from a 300 ft artesian well on the sight. They used Cleveland bay horses for delivery work. The brewery was later run by wlliam (born 1848)& Thomas Lascelles Kirk. The brewery owned a number of local pubs, such as the Bowesfield. William Kirk J.P. went on to become chairman of the North Eastern Breweries Ltd and died in 1929.I believe he lived in a large house at Norton.

  3. Interesting to see a picture of the Stockton Brewery. We have a copy of the brewing records for the brewery from 1901 and have been carrying out test brews on all their old recipes with some interesting results. Hoping to start selling some of the beer around the region before too long. steven.proudfoot@darwinbrewery.com

  4. Brewing may have ceased C.1930 but the premises continued to be used as a distribution site for beers from The North Eastern Breweries Ltd and finally Vaux Breweries Ltd.Vaux also owned the Norton Grange Brewery at one point.

  5. It was called the Castle Brewery because a previous building on the site had been Stockton Castle which was demolished, except for a barn, after the English Civil War.
