The fire station in West Row was not yet complete when in 1885 when there was a serious fire scare at the New Theatre Royal which built just 20 years earlier on Yarm Lane, just inside what had been moat to Stockton Castle. The fire tenders of the day were horse drawn, the pumps were worked by stream or even by hand, and the volunteer firemen were called to a fire by the tolling of a bell which still may exist in the cupola of the Town Hall in the High Street. The New Theatre Royal which could hold up to 2,000 people eventually burned to the ground on August 28th 1906.
My Nana Evelyn Sixton used to be the cook at Stockton Fire Station for many years in the 50s and 60s. Does anyone remember her? I used to visit her at work if I was in town with my Mam and loved watching the firemen using the hoses and rolling them up, and ocassionally using the pole! If I was lucky I got to sample whatever desert my Nana was cooking.
I used to work in the Asda warehouse from 1979 – 1993 and we used to have trouble getting wagons to reverse into the loading bay area. It used to be a right bottle-neck on busy days. But when Asda went central warehouse it was not too bad because they used to drive up to the front entrance of the store and annoyed some Taxi drivers. Happy days and all.
This is West Row the shop sticking out was a baby shop I remember it was so small you couldnt bring prams inside, I would never leave my daughter outside so could only visit when I had some to keep an eye on the pram 🙂 With all the wagons passing going to Asda it was pretty precarious!
The old firestation became a furniture store owned by Les Moore, who later owned various pubs and clubs around Stockton , and is still in Stockton today. [2004]
Thank you gentlemen for pointing out the error with the location. The photograph does indeed show West Row and not Stockton High Street as stated.
Yes it is West Row, Stockton Fire Station, you can see the tower they used.
I agree that this is West Row and the central building is the now demolished, old fire station.
Surely this is West Row, not High Street?
